Tencent Media Lab invited to present the latest AV2 standardization progress at ICIP 2021
A senior researcher from Tencent Media Lab presented Tencent's frontier technology contributions to the Alliance for Open Media (AOMedia) AV2 video coding standardization project at an ICIP 2021 workshop. Google has hosted the workshop annually since 2012. At Google's invitation, Tencent Media Lab and the Google team jointly delivered a technical presentation on advances in video compression and scalable visual quality assessment. AV2 is AOMedia's next-generation royalty-free video codec standardization project. Tencent Media Lab currently ranks among the top two contributors by number of adopted technical proposals. Other major contributors include Google, Apple, Facebook, Intel, and Alibaba.
The IEEE International Conference on Image Processing (ICIP) is a world-renowned annual event for the image processing community. First held in Austin, Texas, in 1994, the conference has now convened 28 times. ICIP 2021 was originally scheduled for Anchorage, Alaska, but moved entirely online due to the pandemic. Two papers from Tencent Media Lab were accepted:
- L. Zhao, X. Zhao, S. Liu, Semi-Decoupled Partitioning for Video Coding Beyond AV1
- S. Kahu, M. P. Krishnan, X. Zhao, S. Liu, Context-Adaptive Secondary Transform For Video Coding
ICIP has hosted a Google workshop every year since 2012, including in 2021, when the theme was "Advances in video compression and scalable visual quality assessment." At the Google team's invitation, a senior researcher from Tencent Media Lab joined Dr. Guleryuz from Google to present "Towards a next generation AOM codec."
The presentation introduced Tencent's contributions to next-generation video coding, including advanced technologies already adopted in the AV2 reference software. It covered five major contributions from Tencent Media Lab: Semi-Decoupled Partitioning (SDP), Intra Secondary Transform (IST), Adaptive Intra Mode Coding (AIMC), Multiple Reference Line Selection (MRLS), and Cross-Component Sample Offset (CCSO).
